Doan was examined in Los Angeles by Dr. Robert Watkins, a noted spine surgeon, who said the injury would not require an operation. Watkins has consulted other pro athletes including Mario Lemieux, Troy Aikman, Randy Johnson and Wayne Gretzky, who is now the Coyotes' coach.

Doan has missed four games this season, one more than he missed in the past three seasons combined.

He injured his back in the Oct. 24 game at Calgary but played last Saturday night, scoring two goals in Phoenix's 6-4 home victory over Los Angeles.

However, Doan said he felt the injury the entire game and team officials decided that he should see a back specialist for a second opinion.

Doan, who scored a career-high 30 goals last season, has just four goals in 11 games this season and is in the final year of his contract.

The Coyotes, in last place in the Pacific Division with a 4-11-0 record, host San Jose on Saturday night.
