The Arizona Coyotes are down an assistant GM after Darcy Regier left his post for “personal reasons.” Regier, 59, joined the Coyotes in July 2014 after 17 seasons with the Buffalo Sabres from 1997 to 2013.

After less than two seasons as the Arizona Coyotes assistant GM, Darcy Regier has stepped away from his post for unspecified personal reasons.

Tuesday, the Coyotes confirmed Regier had left the organization, but did not comment further on Regier's departure.

Regier, 59, was hired by the Coyotes in July 2014 to serve as the team’s senior vice president and assistant general manager, where he was to work under Arizona GM Don Maloney. Regier filled the post vacated by Brad Treliving, who left the Coyotes to take over the GM job in Calgary. At the time of Regier’s hiring, Maloney said it was a great addition to the Coyotes’ staff.

“Darcy adds intelligence and experience to our management team,” Maloney said at the time of the hiring. “The wealth of knowledge he has garnered as a long-time general manager in the National Hockey League is invaluable to us.”

During his time in Arizona, Regier was responsible for a number of duties. On top of scouting and player evaluation, Regier had a hand in watching over the Coyotes’ AHL operations, first in Portland and then in Springfield this season, as well as playing a role in staffing the clubs, according to Arizona Sports’ Craig Morgan.

Regier was a long-tenured GM in his own right before coming to Arizona. Prior to his hiring by the Coyotes, Regier spent 17 seasons with the Buffalo Sabres, beginning in 1997. He was relieved of his duties as Sabres GM in November 2013.

There’s no report of an immediate replacement for Regier, nor have the Coyotes released an official statement regarding his departure. Arizona does have two additional assistant GMs. However, Regier was the highest-ranking of all three. Chris O’Hearn and John Chayka both have assistant duties with the Coyotes, with O’Hearn having a focus in hockey operations while Chayka takes care of analytics.
