New Jersey Devils netminder Cory Schneider has been incredible once again this season. Wednesday night, Schneider made a reach-back blocker stop that stole a goal from Blue Jackets defenseman David Savard.
Cory Schneider has been one of the best goaltenders in the league since landing the full-time starting job in New Jersey, and he doesn’t appear to be slowing down any time soon. After an absolutely star-making performance with the Devils in 2014-15, Schneider is putting up strong numbers again thanks to incredible saves like his stop Wednesday night.
In the first period of Wednesday’s game, the Blue Jackets were on the power play and worked the puck around the zone before Jack Johnson fired a shot from the blueline. The puck took a crazy hop off the glass and landed right on the stick of Boone Jenner, who made an awesome no-look, between the legs pass to defenseman David Savard.
Savard had almost the whole net to shoot at with only Devils blueliner Adam Larsson appearing to be an obstacle. Savard fired the puck past Larsson, but was robbed by Schneider’s miraculous save:
Schneider surprised himself with the stop, which is obvious by the fact the Devils netminder can’t find the puck after it falls to the ice in front of him. By the time he goes to smother the puck in his crease, he’s facing the opposite direction with the puck sneaking out into the slot area back to Savard. The Blue Jackets defender fired his second chance well over the net, though.
Columbus would manage to sneak two shots by Schneider before the game was through, however, and New Jersey couldn’t keep pace offensively, falling 2-1 Wednesday night.
Even still, the Devils, who finished 25th in the NHL in 2014-15, have been one of the bigger surprises this campaign. Through 21 games, New Jersey is only two points out of a wild-card spot in the Eastern Conference, and much of that has been thanks to Schneider’s play. Of the 38 netminders to play 400 minutes at 5-on-5, Schneider currently sits eighth in the league with a .940 save percentage. He’s also in the top 10 in the league for overall SP, goals-against average and victories.
