Steve Mason is on his way back to the Ontario Hockey League.

The Columbus Blue Jackets re-assigned the 19-year-old goaltender to the Kitchener Rangers on Friday. Mason had been with the NHL team on emergency recall since Jan. 7 and didn't see any action.

Prior to that, he backstopped Canada to a gold medal at the world junior hockey championship in the Czech Republic. Mason received tournament MVP and top goaltender honours.

The native of Oakville, Ont., was drafted 69th overall by Columbus in 2006. He went 1-2-0 with a 1.78 goals-against average and .913 save percentage in three pre-season games and started the season with the Blue Jackets. He never played.

Mason then spent the first half of the season with the London Knights before being acquired by the Rangers in a trade while still at the world junior tournament.
