ST. JOHN'S, N.L. - Daniel Cleary is the first hockey player from Newfoundland and Labrador to win the Stanley Cup, an achievement that Premier Danny Williams says is reflective of the province's growing confidence.

"It's just another little notch in our belt as Newfoundlanders and Labradorians," Williams said Thursday.

"We're a tour de force and we're coming in Canada. I just want to thank Danny Cleary for having done that for us."

Cleary, from Harbour Grace, N.L., helped Detroit defeat the Pittsburgh Penguins 3-2 Wednesday night and win the series 4-2.

His hometown was painted red - literally - with flags, signs and decals bearing the Red Wings logo throughout the NHL playoffs.

Only 26 players from Newfoundland and Labrador have played in the NHL.

Cleary is expected to bring the Cup to the province later this year.
