Chris Stewart fought Torey Krug: are we OK with this?

The Anaheim Ducks power forward outweighed his Boston Bruins dance partner by 45 pounds and had five inches on him. Broadcaster Jack Edwards was apoplectic; Krug says he brought the matter on himself. What say you, good reader?

The Anaheim Ducks laid several types of beatings on the Boston Bruins last night. The most obvious was on the scoreboard, where The Flock came away with a 6-2 road victory. On a more individualized basis, there was also the mismatched fight between Anaheim's Chris Stewart and Boston's Torey Krug.

Stewart comes in at 6-foot-2, 231 pounds. Krug, an offensive defenseman, is 5-foot-9 and 186 pounds. Here's what happens when those combinations of atoms collide:

Not a super result for Krug, as was to be expected. I mean, points for the effort, but silver medal on the podium. Bruins broadcaster Jack Edwards, as you may have heard in the video, was not impressed with Stewart taking on the much-smaller Krug.

For the record, Krug told the Boston Herald that the fight was his idea:

“I started it,” he said. “He didn’t want to fight me. It’s a mismatch. But at the end of the day, I don’t know, I didn’t like what happened there and I got a little crazy."

So, does that let Stewart off the hook? You can only go so far out of your way to avoid a fight when an opponent is starting up with you (especially when that guy is wearing Black and Gold – Bruins are an historically tough bunch, no matter their size), but on the other hand, Stewart probably could have done more – a bear hug (no pun intended) likely would have immobilized the smaller D-man.

Krug has fought in the past, albeit against young skill players such as Ryan Strome and Alex Galchenyuk. So, what do you say? Was "The Code" broken here, or is Stewart in the clear?
