TORONTO - Blackhawks defenceman Niklas Hjalmarsson was given a two-game suspension by the NHL on Wednesday for his hit on Sabres forward Jason Pominville during a game this week.

Hjalmarsson drew a five-minute major and a game misconduct on the play, which occurred late in the first period of Chicago's 4-3 victory on Monday night.

Pominville was injured after skating backward along the sideboard in the Sabres' end, waiting for the puck to reach him. Hjalmarsson hit him just behind the right shoulder. Pominville was sent face-first into the boards and crumpled to the ice.

He was carted off after a 15-minute delay, giving a thumbs-up sign to the quieted arena. Pominville is out indefinitely and has been resting at home after experiencing concussion symptoms.

Hjalmarsson will forfeit US$37,634.40 in salary. He is eligible to return Saturday when the Blackhawks will again face Buffalo.
