The NHL all-star game attracted CBC's largest audience for the showcase event in nine years as an average of 1.516 million viewers tuned in Sunday.

The last time the event was held on Canadian soil - in Toronto in 2000 - CBC attracted 1.557 million viewers.

The numbers represented a 30 cent jump over last year's game, which was played in Atlanta.

Saturday night's skills event drew 1.358 million viewers, the competition's largest audience to date.

"Once again Montreal has reaffirmed its place as one of the greatest hockey markets in the world," Scott Moore, executive director of CBC Sports, said in a statement.

"The excitement and enthusiasm throughout the city were no doubt influential factors in making this weekend's events must-see television."

The NHL all-star game was cancelled in 2005 because of the lockout, while the NHL's participation at the Winter Olympics in 2006 also bumped the event.
