The Capitals have signed forward Chris Clark to a US$7.9-million, three-year contract extension. Clark will make $1.1 million next season in the last year of his old deal and then earn $2.75 million in 2008-09, $2.65 million in 2009-10 and $2.5 million in 2010-11.

"Chris is a consummate professional and a terrific leader," vice-president and general manager George McPhee said in a release Wednesday. "He has been an integral part of our team's growth in the past two seasons, both on and off the ice.

"We are excited that he will be a Washington Capital for many years to come."

Clark, 31, is coming off his first year as team captain and a career year offensively, putting up 54 points (30-24) in 74 games.

A native of South Windsor, Conn., Clark has 85 goals and 79 assists in 430 career NHL games with Calgary and Washington.
