VANCOUVER - The Vancouver Canucks signed defenceman Alex Edler to a US$13-million, four-year contract extension Friday.

Edler, who will receive $550,000 this season, will receive $3.25 million per year starting next season.

"Alex is a gifted puck-moving defenceman who sees the ice extremely well for such a young player," Canucks general manager Mike Gillis said in a statement. "He has made great strides in his career and we look forward to further growth and development in his game."

Edler recorded 20 points (8-12) and 42 penalty minutes in 75 games for the Canucks last season. In 97 career NHL regular-season games, the six-foot-three 217-pound Swede has 23 points (9-14) and 48 penalty minutes.

The Canucks selected Edler with the 91st overall pick in the 2004 NHL entry draft. He played for Sweden at the 2006 IIHF world junior championship and at this year's world hockey championship.
