VANCOUVER - Vancouver Canucks defenceman Alex Edler is scheduled to undergo back surgery and will be out of the lineup indefinitely.
''After consultation with our physicians it was decided that surgery was the best course of action," Canucks GM Mike Gillis said in a statement Thursday.
Edler missed Vancouver's 2-1 victory over the Nashville Predators Wednesday night after suffering back spasms.
The 24-year-old native of Ostersund, Sweden, has eight goals and 24 assists in 49 games this season.
Elder is the latest Canucks blue-liner to go down with an injury. Aaron Rome has missed six games with a knee injury while Andrew Alberts has been out five with a bad shoulder. Both are expected to return after the all-star break.
Veteran Sami Salo has missed the season recovering from a ruptured Achilles tendon suffered during the summer. Salo has been skating with the Canucks, but the team isn't predicting when he might return.
