P.K. Subban had been, along with goalie Carey Price, the face of the Canadiens franchise for the past five years but is now on his way to Nashville.

All the P.K. Subban trade chatter turned out to have some merit after all. On Wednesday, the Montreal Canadiens sent the all-star defenseman to the Nashville Predators for fellow all-star Shea Weber in a blockbuster, straight up, deal. Subban, 27, had been, along with goalie Carey Price, the face of the franchise for the past five years. He was a two-time all-star, and won the Norris Trophy as the NHL's top defenseman in 2012-13. Last season, he scored six goals and 51 points in 68 games before missing the final 14 games of the season with a neck injury. Subban's off-ice contributions were just as notable. His personality and charisma made him a fan favorite, and his philanthropic endeavours were without equal in Canada. In September 2015, he donated $10 million to the Montreal Children Hospital and had a wing named in his honor. It was the largest ever single charitable donation by a Canadian athlete. Subban is entering the third year of an eight year, $72 million deal. The Predators, who made a run to the second round of the playoffs this season, know exactly what they're getting in Subban. “Subban is an elite offensive defenseman with tremendous skill and contagious energy that makes the Nashville Predators a better team now and into the future,” Predators general manager David Poile said in a release. “Superstar defensemen of his caliber are a rare commodity, and we are thrilled to add him to the organization.” Subban, it appears, is happy to be on his way to Nashville. Weber is an elite defenseman himself, but at 30 is getting passed his prime and has an astounding 10 years remaining on his contract. Weber will earn $12 million in actual salary over the next two years but has an average cap hit of $7.8 million through 2025-26. Weber is a four-time all-star and two-time Olympian. Along with his two Olympic gold medals he's won gold at the world juniors and world championship, and won a Memorial Cup title. In 2015-16, he scored 20 goals and had 51 points in 78 games. He is a workhorse who has only missed 34 games over his 11 year career.
