NY Islanders (22-37-8) at Montreal (36-24-7), 7:30 p.m. EDT

MONTREAL (Ticker) -- So far so good for Montreal Canadiens
general manager Bob Gainey.

The Canadiens shoot for their second win in as many games under
the new coach when the host the New York Islanders on Thursday.

Enduring an inconsistent centennial season, the Canadiens fired
coach Guy Carbonneau on Monday and Gainey moved into the role
behind the bench.

Montreal responded in Gainey's first game, claiming a 4-3
overtime victory against the Edmonton Oilers in on Monday.

The Canadiens trailed 3-2 late in the contest but Mathieu
Schneider tied it with 4:35 remaining in regulation and captain
Saku Koivu netted a power-play goal 1:40 into overtime to seal
the victory.

Montreal is fifth in the Eastern Conference standings, but the
club's playoff position is far from secure with the ninth-place
New York Rangers three points behind.

The Islanders' playoff chances have virtually been over since
opening night.

While the club earned 10 points over the last seven games, the
Islanders own the worst record in the league, including a 6-23-3
road mark.
