MONTREAL - The season is over for Montreal Canadiens defenceman Andrei Markov, who will undergo surgery on his right knee next week.

The procedure, to be performed Wednesday by specialist Dr. James Andrews, will repair a meniscus and reconstruct the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in his knee.

"We are very confident that Andrei will be able to fully recover from this injury," Canadiens general manager Pierre Gauthier said in a statement Friday.

The 31-year-old was injured during a Nov. 13 game in Montreal against Carolina and has missed the team's last nine contests.

Markov collected a goal and two assists in seven games this season.

He also missed the first 10 games of the season, from Oct. 7-29 with a knee injury suffered April 30.
