In their first elimination contest since the Sochi Olympics, the Canadian women’s national team defeated rival Team USA to win the 4 Nations Cup in Kamloops, B.C., on Saturday night.

Canada’s Brianne Jenner played the role of hero with the only goal in the shootout and netminder Genevieve Lacasse made a pair of glove saves to preserve Canada’s 3-2 shootout victory.

Jennifer Wakefield, who led the tournament with four points, tallied twice of Canada in regulation, including a deflection that put Canada ahead in the first and a turn-around wrist shot that found twine late in the second to draw Canada even.

Throughout the third period and overtime, it seemed as though USA was primed to break through at any moment. Outshooting Canada 9-8 in the final regulation frame and 10-5 in the extra period, it was all Lacasse could do to hold the fort and keep the score locked at 2-2. Her 33 saves helped her secure player of the game honors for Canada.

With just less than 11 minutes to play in the third period, Canada thought they had the go-ahead goal. After Jenner had carried the puck into the US zone on a neutral zone turnover, she drew a penalty after making a strong move to the middle of the ice. The resulting delayed penalty nullified a Canadian goal just seconds later as the on-ice ruling was that an American player had touched the puck.

Lacasse’s biggest save of the game came in the shootout, stopping American sniper Hilary Knight on USA’s final shot of the event. Knight, who has previously practiced with the NHL’s Anaheim Ducks, scored the breakaway goal that gave the US women the lead in the second period.

Canada’s win gives the team its second straight Four Nations Cup and 14th in the history of the tournament. Team USA has won the remaining five titles.
