CALGARY - Canada's top hockey players have started converging on Calgary.

Chicago Blackhawks defenceman Duncan Keith was the first player off a plane Monday as Team Canada's Olympic orientation camp kicked off.

The 46 players will be put through medicals in the afternoon before taking the ice for practice at the Pengrowth Saddledome.

"There's no better place to kick off the season than right here," veteran forward Ryan Smyth said as he arrived at the airport.

Anaheim Ducks forward Ryan Getzlaf will attend the camp, but will be unable to skate due to a sports hernia.

Hockey Canada will name its final 23-man Olympic roster in December. Canada will be looking to improve on its seventh-place finish at the 2006 Turin Games.

The camp wraps up Thursday.
