CALGARY - The Calgary Flames shuffled players prior to their season-opener Thursday in Vancouver by putting veteran defenceman Rhett Warrener on long-term injury status and recalling Dustin Boyd from the American Hockey League's Quad City Flames.

Warrener, who has spent the last four seasons with the Flames, cleared waivers earlier this week. He sat out three pre-season games with what is reported to be a shoulder injury.

But moving the 32-year-old, who has a one-way contract worth US$2.5 million this season, onto the long-term injury list gave the Flames room under the NHL's US$56.7-million cap to recall Boyd, who has a two-way contract and was assigned to Quad City on Wednesday.

Boyd, 22, was one of the league's leaders in pre-season scoring with seven points in five games.

Long-term injury status is for players who will sit out at least 10 regular season games and 24 calendar days.

Another veteran defenceman, 33-year-old Anders Eriksson, also cleared waivers and was assigned to Quad City along with forward Jamie Lundmark.
