Bruins goalies Fernandez, Thomas share NHL December first star award; Mason top rookie

NEW YORK - Boston Bruins goalies Manny Fernandez and Tim Thomas are the co-recipients of the NHL's first star award for December.

Fernandez and Thomas combined to post a 12-1-0 record with a 2.00 goals-against average and a .929 save percentage in 13 games.

Philadelphia Flyers centre Jeff Carter took second star honours while Washington Capitals winger Alex Ovechkin was named third star.

Columbus Blue Jackets goaltender Steve Mason took rookie of the month honours.

Fernandez went 5-1-0 with a 1.58 GAA and a .946 save percentage, while Thomas won all seven of his starts with a 2.40 GAA and a .922 save percentage.

Carter tied for the lead among NHL scorers with 21 points (11-10) in 14 games as the Flyers went 9-3-2. He leads the league in goals (27) and ranks ninth with 43 points.

Ovechkin led the league in goals for the month with 12, while guiding Washington to an 11-3-0 record. He ranks second in the NHL with 52 points.

Meanwhile, Mason went 7-5-0 with a 1.41 GAA, .950 save percentage and three shutouts in 12 games to take top rookie honours for a second consecutive month.

St. Louis centre Patrik Berglund, Anaheim winger Bobby Ryan, Boston winger Blake Wheeler, Florida centre Michael Frolik and Chicago winger Kris Versteeg were also considered for the award.
