In a deal first rumoured at the NHL entry draft in Columbus last weekend, the Bruins acquired Manny Fernandez from the Minnesota Wild in exchange for winger Petr Kalus and a fourth-round pick in the 2009 NHL entry draft.

The Bruins had also inquired about Vesa Toskala last week before San Jose traded him to Toronto. So Bruins GM Peter Chiarelli re-focused his energy on acquiring Fernandez.

The Wild had been shopping Fernandez ever since they re-signed No. 1 goalie Niklas Backstrom to a US$6.2-million, two-year deal last month. Fernandez will earn $4.5 million next season and $4.75 million in 2008-09 - too much money for the Wild to carry him as a backup to Backstrom. Josh Harding will back up Backstrom next season.

Fernandez, 32, went 22-16-1 last season with a 2.55 goals-against average and .911 save percentage, his sixth seasons with the Wild.

Kalus, 20, had 30 points (13-17) and 110 penalty minutes in 43 games with the AHL's Providence Bruins last season.
