In a deal first rumoured at the NHL entry draft in Columbus last weekend, the Bruins acquired Manny Fernandez from the Minnesota Wild on Sunday in exchange for winger Petr Kalus and a fourth-round draft pick in the 2009.

The Bruins had also inquired about Vesa Toskala last week before San Jose traded him to Toronto. So Bruins GM Peter Chiarelli re-focused his energy on acquiring Fernandez.

The Wild had been shopping Fernandez ever since they re-signed No. 1 goalie Niklas Backstrom to a US$6.2-million, two-year deal last month.

Fernandez will earn $4.5 million next season and $4.75 million in 2008-09 - too much money for the Wild to carry him as a backup to Backstrom. Josh Harding will back up Backstrom next season.

Fernandez, 32, went 22-16-1 last season with a 2.55 goals-against average and .911 save percentage, his sixth season with the Wild.

Kalus, 20, had 30 points (13-17) and 110 penalty minutes in 43 games with the AHL's Providence Bruins last season.
