The National Hockey League can talk parity but the Canadian Women’s Hockey League plays it. For the second consecutive year, the Clarkson Cup championship was earned in overtime as the Boston Blades beat the Montreal Stars 3-2.

The deadlock was dissolved by Janine Weber’s goal 2:12 seconds beyond regulation, assisted by Tara Watchorn and Corinne Buie.

It’s the second time in three years the Blades have won the Clarkson Cup and their third straight appearance in the final game. CWHL Rookie of the Year Brianna Decker capped off her 32 points - 16 goals and 16 assists - in 12 regular season games with a Clarkson Cup leading eight points. She tied teammate Hilary Knight with three power play goals in the championship series and had its only short-handed marker.

The victory over the Stars was even sweeter because Boston forfeited two games to them in November, due to a dispute with the CWHL over contracts.

“Definitely playing Montreal only four times this year and losing two games that we didn’t even play was rough. It was a big win today and nice to beat them,” said Decker.

Montreal goaltender Charline Labonte’s efforts - including 136:29 of play before giving up her first goal of the tournament to Hilary Knight - drew praise from her Blades counterpart.

“She played an incredible game and we just had to solve her and get some goals by her,” said Genevieve Lacasse. “We really battled that the whole game. She played unbelievable. We got lucky there at the end.”

Since a dispute over guardianship and awarding of the Clarkson Cup was resolved in 2009, US teams have won three times - Boston in 2013 and 2015, and Minnesota in 2010. The Montreal Stars have also won three times while 2014 was the Toronto Furies only championship.
