The Columbus forward was penalized for cross-checking Sidney Crosby during the second period of Friday night's game. It's the first suspension of Dubinsky's career.

The NHL’s Department of Player Safety has suspended Columbus Blue Jackets forward one game for his cross check to the head of Penguins captain Sidney Crosby.

Dubinsky was assessed a minor penalty for cross checking with 1:20 remaining in the second period on Friday night. Crosby immediately went to the Pens’ room, but returned for the start of the third period.

Here’s the explanation from the league:

Dubinsky forfeits $31, 451.61 in salary for the suspension.

“There’s no secret. I try to play (Crosby) as hard as I can,” Dubinsky said postgame per Aaron Portzline of The Columbus Dispatch. “That being said, I don’t try and do anything dirty. I felt like my stick (rode) up his back a little bit. He’s kind of bent over there in front. But again, that’s not the type of player I am. I’m going to play hard, but try and play fair and play in between the whistle. I think the stick rode up a little bit, but it wasn’t malicious or vicious or too hard in my opinion.”

This is the first suspension for Dubinsky, who will miss tonight’s game in St. Louis.

Dubinsky’s only other run-in with the league’s disciplinary committee was $10,000 fine in February 2013 for boarding L.A. Kings’ defenseman Rob Scuderi.
