Blackhawks acquire Kimmo Timonen from Flyers for draft picks

The Chicago Blackhawks have acquired defenseman Kimmo Timonen from the Philadelphia Flyers for a second-round pick in 2015 and a conditional fourth-round pick in 2016. Timonen, 39, hasn't played in 2014-15, but he told Philadelphia media he could have played on Saturday with the Flyers.

Early during the first period of Chicago's game against the Tampa Bay Lightning, the Blackhawks announced that they have acquired defenseman Kimmo Timonen from the Philadelphia Flyers in exchange for a 2015 second-round pick and conditional fourth-round pick in 2016.

The trade comes just days after the Blackhawks lost blueliner Johnny Oduya to an upper-body injury and winger Patrick Kane to a broken clavicle. Timonen, 39, hasn't suited up all season due to blood clots in his legs, but recently took the ice again with the Flyers for practice leading some to believe he could be back on the ice as soon as this week.

A veteran of 1,092 games, Timonen has spent the last seven seasons in Philadelphia, helping the Flyers to the 2010 Stanley Cup final, in which they lost to the Blackhawks in six games. In 77 games last season, Timonen scored six goals and 35 points.

The Blackhawks had reportedly been after defensive help for some time, and the trade for Timonen gives Chicago another puck moving option on the second pairing. Adding a defenseman that can skate and pass the Blackhawks out of trouble on that pairing -- especially with the injury to Oduya -- will help Chicago in a big way.

If Timonen had remained with the Flyers, he had told reporters that he would have been good to skate in Saturday's game against the New York Rangers. Drafted in the 10th round of the 1993 draft, Timonen will turn 40 on March 18.

By giving up two draft picks, the Blackhawks keep in tact an already diminished defensive group and allow themselves some flexibility if Timonen needs several games to get back into game shape.
