ANAHEIM, Calif. - Defenceman Kevin Bieksa scored on a power play, Aaron Rome and Steve Bernier added goals and Kyle Wellwood had two assists, leading the Vancouver Canucks to a 3-0 pre-season victory over the Anaheim Ducks on Thursday night.
Roberto Luongo played the first two periods and stopped all 19 shots he faced. Cory Schneider took over with a 3-0 lead and made nine saves, one on a penalty shot by Todd Marchant with 8:58 to play.
Luongo was playing for the first time since his 7-5 loss in Game 6 of the Western Conference semifinals against Chicago that eliminated the Canucks from the playoffs.
Luongo, who last season became the first NHL goalie in 60 years to be named his team's captain, signed US$64 million, 12-year contract extension on Sept. 2. He went 33-13-7 with nine shutouts and a 2.35 goals-against average during the regular season - despite missing almost two months with a groin injury.
In a game that included four fights during the first two periods, Vancouver opened the scoring at 7:09 of the first when Evan Oberg took a wrist shot that struck Wellwood in front before Bernier converted the carom.
Bieksa connected at 9:44 of the second period, using teammate Matt Pope as a screen and beating Jean-Sebastien Giguere under the glove with a long wrist shot from the left point. Rome made it 3-0 at 17:47 of the period, converting Mason Raymond's pass at the left of the crease.
Giguere stopped 14 of 16 shots before he was replaced by Justin Pogge midway through the second period trailing 2-0. Pogge stopped 19 of 20 shots.
