The NHL Department of Player Safety announced on Saturday evening that Colorado Avalanche defenseman Tyson Barrie has been suspended three games for a charging/interference infraction on Anaheim Ducks defenseman Simon Despres that occurred on Friday night. "Well after Despres has lost possession of the puck, Barrie launches up and into his hit, making significant contact with Despres' head. This is both charging and interference," the Department of Player Safety explains in its video explanation of the decision. "Instead of staying low and driving through Despres' chest, the 5-foot-10 Barrie launches up and into the hit, making substantial contact with the 6-foot-4 Despres' head." Barrie wasn't penalized on the play, which occured at 11:30 of the second period. The Avs defenseman had no previous supplemental discipline from the NHL. Despres left the game and didn't return. The Ducks defenseman was placed on injured reserve on Saturday morning with an upper-body injury. Anaheim has recalled defensemen Korbinian Holzer and Shea Theodore from the AHL's San Diego Gulls.
