Analysis: Todd Bertuzzi well worth the risk for Flames

Todd Bertuzzi is worth the risk.

While he will likely never be the star and power forward he was in his prime, Bertuzzi proved last season in Anaheim he can still play a role.

And that is exactly what he’ll be asked to do with the Calgary Flames who gave him $1.95 million to play with them next season.

His signing comes hot on the heels of Owen Nolan’s decision to jump ship for Minnesota after a splendid comeback year with the Flames last season.

Nolan produced 16 goals and 32 points for Calgary while Bertuzzi managed 14 goals and 40 points for the Ducks.

Big Bert’s health has been a concern the past few years – he suffers from a bad back – but when he is healthy, Bertuzzi remains a speedy and powerful forward who makes his presence felt around the opposition’s net.

Chances are playing with the Flames – who now boast considerable depth up front and have one of the NHL’s best all-around forwards in Jarome Iginla – means Bertuzzi will not be a go-to guy, but a supplemental player.

At less than $2 million a year, Bertuzzi could wind up being one of the best bargains in an otherwise weird off-season of silly signings.
