The American squad dominated the Swiss thanks to early goals from Christian Dvorak and Auston Matthews and cruised to an easy 10-1 victory. Matthews led the way with two goals and four points, and four American players finished with three-point games.

The United States dominated from start to finish and the game couldn’t end soon enough for the Swiss as they were beaten handily by the Americans 10-1.

It wasn’t immediate domination, though. Swiss goaltender Joren van Pottelberghe, who was outstanding in Switzerland’s 3-2 shootout loss to Canada, stood tall early in the outing, but the contest got out of hand once the American opened the floodgates on a goal by Christian Dvorak shortly after the seven-minute mark of the first period. Little more than a minute later, Auston Matthews doubled USA’s lead and Brandon Carlo extended it to 3-0 at the midway mark of the first.

Before the first period was through, the Americans chased van Pottelberghe and Zach Werenski, Matthew Tkachuk and Nick Schmaltz added tallies to send USA to the dressing room ahead 6-0.

The second and third frames weren’t necessary in the contest, as the United States continued to beat up on the Swiss. Early in the second period, Switzerland got on the board thanks to a goal by Timo Meier, but Tkachuk answered back for USA less than a minute later and the Americans led the contest 10-1 by the end of the second period.

Remarkably, the Americans didn’t outshoot the Swiss by a wide margin, but the difference was in goaltending. USA scored on four of their first seven shots, and the final shot totals were 33-28 for the Americans.

Several American players ended the contest with three points, including Tkachuk, Dvorak, Werenski and Colin White. Auston Matthews, the 2016 draft’s top prospect, led the way with two goals and four points.

Thanks to the big win over Switzerland, USA is likely to finish second in Group A. The Americans will take on the Danes tomorrow in another game that is likely to be a blowout for Team USA and with a regulation win they’ll finish the round robin with nine points. No matter the result of Sweden’s game against Canada, USA’s nine points will put them in second place as Sweden holds a victory over the American squad.
