All hail the open game

The 1993-94 playoffs were the spark to my hockey obsession. It opened my eyes to the speed and excitement of the game, more specifically to the talents of one Pavel Bure.

While recently surfing channels, I stumbled upon an MSG Vault replay of Game 7. I was astounded by the differences in the game from then to now. The speed and flow to the game was the most apparent change. The clutching and grabbing was astounding!

The ice seemed smaller and the players less skilled. I know this is not the case, but after such an incredible display of unhindered talent by the Red Wings and Penguins this past final, anything less is boring!

I think hockey is now being played the way it was meant to be played and can only dream of what past greats could have accomplished with the freedom that today's players are given.

I hope new fans were captured by this year's final, just as I was 15 years ago, and that the game continues to grow and gain the acclaim it now deserves.
