OTTAWA - Ottawa's Alex Kovalev recorded his 1,000th point Monday night with a power-play goal midway through the first period of the Senators' game against Los Angeles.

Kovalev's power-play marker came at the 10:00 mark with Los Angeles's Wayne Simmonds in the penalty box for tripping.

Sergei Gonchar's deflected shot from the point bounced straight to Kovalev, whose stick broke as he drove a slap shot from the right side past Jonathan Quick. The milestone puck ended up in the net while the blade of his stick skittered against the boards behind the goal.

The 37-year-old Russian stood up from his seat on the Senators' bench to acknowledge a standing ovation from the crowd. Earlier in the period, he was helped back to the bench after an open-ice hit by Los Angeles' Ryan Smyth.

Kovalev, who has 418 goals and 582 assists in 1,249 regular-season games, began his NHL career with New York in 1992-93 and won a Stanley Cup with the Rangers in 1994. He has also played for Pittsburgh and Montreal.

Kovalev is the 76th NHL player to record 1,000 points and he joins Sergei Fedorov and Alexander Mogilny as only the third Russian player to reach the milestone.

Ottawa captain Daniel Alfredsson also got his 1,000th point earlier this season.
