Alec Martinez not close to returning because “they nearly cut his finger off”

Los Angeles Kings defenseman Alec Martinez was only supposed to be out for a week’s worth of game action, but it could be longer as coach Darryl Sutter says his finger was nearly cut off.

In today’s terrible hockey news, Los Angeles Kings defenseman Alec Martinez is going to be out a while longer with a broken pinky because “they almost cut the thing off,” according to coach Darryl Sutter.

That’s right: Martinez was nearly pinkyless after breaking the digit while blocking a shot during a game late last week, Sutter told the Los Angeles Times.

Initially, the projection for Martinez was that he would just miss a weeks worth of games, but it’s looking like it’s going to be a bit longer for the Kings rearguard. If Sutter is to be believed, “a bit longer” might be an understatement, as the Kings bench boss also made a remark about Martinez currently being at about 20 percent health.

The loss of Martinez – and the near loss of his pinky, which is still hard to fathom – means the Kings blueline will be even thinner going forward. Already without Slava Voynov, who has been suspended indefinitely following and alleged attack and subsequent felony charge, the Kings will roll out a six-man defensive unit which will include Jamie McBain and Brayden McNabb.

Here’s hoping Martinez gets healthy soon and gets to keep all his fingers.
