15-year-old wunderkind, viral video star Oliver Wahlstrom commits to Harvard

For the second time in his young career, Oliver Wahlstrom has committed to an NCAA program. The 15-year-old committed to the Harvard Crimson for the 2018-19 season after scoring 68 goals and 114 points in 65 games for Shattuck St. Mary’s this past season.

There aren’t many 15-year-olds who are spending their summer picking out their future university, but, then again, there aren’t many 15-year-olds with the absurd amount of talent Oliver Wahlstrom possesses.

Wahlstrom announced Thursday via his Twitter account that he has committed to playing with the Harvard Crimson to begin his NCAA career. He won’t be able to join the club until the 2018-19 season so it’s still some time before we’ll know if the commitment sticks, which is always a concern when young prospects make an early commitment to an NCAA program.

Wahlstrom made headlines in January 2014 when, as a 13-year-old, he became the youngest player to ever commit to an NCAA program when he committed to Maine. That commitment lasted less than 18 months, however, as Wahlstrom, a Maine native, de-committed from the school in July.

While some will indeed remember Wahlstrom as the youngest NCAA recruit ever — a title since taken by 13-year-old Anthony Cipollone — most will recall him from a video of a shootout goal he scored prior to a Boston Bruins game. The video, taken when Wahlstrom was only nine years old, went viral:

Funny to think that six years later we would be talking about that nine-year-old kid as a potential top draft pick in 2018, but here we are.

Wahlstrom spent this past season at Shattuck St. Mary’s, the boarding school that has risen to hockey fame for producing the likes of Sidney Crosby, Jonathan Toews and Zach Parise. Wahlstrom could add to the long list of stars to come out of the hockey program, especially considering in 2014-15 he finished second on the team in scoring with 68 goals and 114 points in 65 games. Whether Wahlstrom ends up at Harvard or not, his name will be one to watch.
