They've stumbled a little this season after growing so much last year, but don't kid yourself: Boston is a force to be reckoned with.
Don’t look now, Eastern Conference collective, but the Boston Bruins are set up to be a force in both the near and distant future. There’s no doubt the B’s have disappointed badly this season after sky-high expectations followed their impressive 2008-09, which saw them finish only one point back of the Presidents’ Trophy-winning Sharks.

After losing to Canada Wednesday night, Alex Ovechkin shoved a camera-person, an incident in the ballpark with Sean Avery's notorious comments.
None of us know the details regarding Alex Ovechkin shoving a person with a camera in the wake of Russia’s embarrassing 7-3 loss at the hands of the Canadians, but no matter what the circumstances – there simply isn't a situation, short of a physical altercation prior to filming, that justifies his actions – the Capitals and/or the NHL need to send a message by suspending him.

This past summer THN put out a greatest jerseys magazine and ran a tournament on THN.com ranking the best NHL sweaters. But there are some good and not so good Olympic entries in Vancouver. Where do they rank?
If one thing became clear after our Greatest Jersey’s of All-Time special edition magazine and summer Jersey Rankings and Tournament on THN.

After 17 seasons in the NHL, 'Olie the Goalie' is spending this year with his kids and enjoying some retirement time in the sun.
Known for his fiery disposition and temper on the ice during his 17-season NHL career, it’s hard to imagine ‘Godzilla’ as a patient full-time parent; getting the kids ready for the day and trekking them around town to gymnastics and other outings.

Through all the rumors, few, if any, expected the Devils to take away the biggest prize. But now that it's done, the Thrashers will be in tough to replace the superstar.
There were a lot of rumors flying around regarding where Ilya Kovalchuk would land prior to the trade deadline, but very few of them involved the New Jersey Devils.

For NHL managers, keeping a core together doesn't always translate to success. Sometimes they have to know when to move on.
There’s an old idiom that says “familiarity breeds contempt,” which seems to apply to all walks of life, especially in love and business.

It doesn't end games quicker, it doesn't help playoff races and it doesn't alter the standings very much, so why does the NHL still have a loser point?
I said I wouldn’t do it. I told myself I’d leave it alone. But, after a nine-month hiatus, I simply couldn’t let it slide any longer.

The air of excitement has been sucked out of Buffalo recently, but with a young and dynamic team dominating the division, it's time to get excited once again.
Ryan Kennedy, a fellow THN staffer and generally good guy, and I make a trip (or two) to Buffalo every year to take in a Sabres game and collect quotes and info for various stories.

It's common knowledge Team Canada could ice a very competitive second Olympic team, but the American second team wouldn't be a slouch, either.
There’s a popular refrain on the north side of the 49th that suggests Canada could field two (or more) full teams for international competition and either could easily win gold.

With half the season in the books, we take a look at the best performances and hand out some early hardware.
Time flies when you’re having fun, they say. Well, the first half of this season must have been a blast because it seems like only yesterday they were dropping the puck in Boston to kick off the campaign.

Even though they may have cap issues beyond this season, Chicago should be thinking about the here and now and not what's coming in the summer.
It’s certainly no revelation considering their lofty status in the NHL’s overall standings, but for my money there’s no better team in the world right now than the Chicago Blackhawks.

THN.com Blog: The crush of expectations

In today's NHL, where pennies are as important as points, players who get the big bucks but fail to step up often feel an unjustified burn of the spotlight.
Prior to the lockout, you could forgive a player who was overpaid because it didn’t really impact the team; you could simply throw more money at the problem, filling the hole left by the underperformer.
