It’s not that I want to rag on the NHL’s lack of good judgment again, but when the items are so blatant, it’s almost antagonistic.

He knew it as soon as he did it. As Alex Ovechkin rolled up on to his feet while Chicago’s Brian Campbell lay prone on the ice, the Washington Capitals superstar knew his shove to the opposing defenseman into the end boards wasn’t cool.

It was a pretty universal sentiment the morning after; Canada-USA was an instant classic. The NHLers, whether they’ll be back to contest the gold medal in Sochi or not, gave outsiders and newcomers the kind of show that makes people hockey fans in the first place.

With all the hand-wringing that has been going on in Canada these days regarding the men’s Olympic hockey team, I was struck by a thought: Has anybody thought to check in with the Russians about pressure?

The Penguins captain has got better each year in the NHL and this year he's become a goal-scorer. But look for Crosby to return to his playmaking roots for Canada.
In its tournament opener against Norway, Canada got the offense it was hoping for, hanging eight goals on a bunch of Vikings and at least one carpenter in a shutout victory.
