As the dynamic defenseman, and No. 2 overall pick in last summer's draft, goes down, who will fill in for Canada next month?
Whether Columbus Blue Jackets prospect Ryan Murray undergoes surgery for his injured shoulder or not, it’s looking unlikely he’ll be suiting up for Team Canada at the World Junior Championship next month.

CHL education opponents way off base

CHL education opponents way off base

by Ryan Kennedy - November 7, 2012 2:31 PM EST

The education packages offered by the CHL don't handcuff kids like they used to and give them time to consider options.
Though the story has already gone through so many permutations and baffling left turns, for the time being the fledgling CHLPA appears to be in ashes.

CHLPA faces complex NCAA eligibility issues

If the CHLPA wants to make it so major junior players can be NCAA eligible, they face many difficult hurdles.
“I’m not crazy; you’re the one who’s crazy. You’re driving me crazy.” - “Institutionalized,” by Suicidal Tendencies There may not be anything more labyrinthine than NCAA regulations, but several newsworthy items of late make it important to delve into what makes a player eligible for the college hockey experience.

Public perception will eventually matter

Public perception will eventually matter

The NHL can only toy with its customers for so long before they'll start to turn on the top league.
It would be understandable to hold the opinion that at least some of the owners in the NHL don’t actually care about what fans think about them.

The Anaheim draft pick had chosen to take the college route with Wisconsin, but his suspension may push him to major junior.
The biggest story out of the prospect world this week centers around Anaheim Ducks second-rounder Nic Kerdiles, a talented power forward who was slated to begin his freshman season at the University of Wisconsin this month.

Are replacement players a viable option?

Are replacement players a viable option?

Is it realistic to expect the NHL to turn to replacement players during the lockout?
I had an interesting conversation with an audio tech guy while doing a TV interview last month. Even though he was a union worker, he didn’t understand why the NHL wouldn’t simply bring in scab players during the then-impending lockout.

Pro prospects must play with caution

Pro prospects must play with caution

A recent, dangerous incident at the University of North Dakota could have ended much worse and leaves us asking, why risk it?
I’ve written about this before, but with the summer the NCAA has had, it’s hard not to bring it up again: It baffles my mind that elite hockey prospects risk their entire futures just to get blitzed at a team party.

Looking at five teams from junior and NCAA circuits that will be worth keeping an eye on this season.

Thoughts on a CHL players' union

Thoughts on a CHL players' union

The CHLPA is in its infancy and may not even get off the ground, but there are some interesting things about it to consider.
I can’t help but be fascinated by the fledgling CHLPA – a group whose origins and membership are cloaked in secrecy, whose detractors claim are devoid of simple math and writing skills.

Is going with four alternate captains rather than giving one player the 'C' a good move by the Canadiens?
