Journalism school is mostly a misty, water-color memory for me, but I have retained some of the basic tenets I learned at Carleton University back in the 1980s, including: get two unconnected sources to corroborate facts; strive to always write clearly and succinctly; and don’t mix alcoholic beverages the night before a big exam (OK, I suppose I didn’t need to attend J-school for that lesson).

While it’s hard to fathom any team lacking intensity for the first game of the second season, two Eastern Conference clubs came out flat in their Game 1s on Wednesday and will need to rectify that Friday night.

A return to the days where teams stayed within their division until the conference final is something the league should explore.
I suppose when you do anything long enough, you run the risk of breeding blasé.
Nearly 20 years into my career at The Hockey News, however, I can’t ever envision that happening with the NHL playoffs.

With some playoff games likely to be aired on TSN2, fans who subscribe to Rogers will be left in the dark.
When I first started watching the NHL as a kid, I was lucky if I got to see two periods a week. Hockey Night in Canada viewing was a ritual and bedtime was usually when the buzzer sounded after the first; on special occasions, I got to see the second.

It'll be 16 straight years if a team north of the 49th doesn't claim Stanley this spring, leaving some to question the fairness of the NHL's construction.
Barring the unlikely, June 2009 will mark the 16th anniversary of the last time a Canadian-based franchise won the Stanley Cup.
A drought of such epic proportions would have been heckled back in 1993, when the Montreal Canadiens dealt with the Los Angeles Kings in five games to win their 24th title.

I received an email the other day from Szymon Szemberg, the communications director for the International Ice Hockey Federation and a man with a deep appreciation, affection and understanding of the North American version of the game.

The trade deadline is the highest traffic generator for TV stations and websites, so why not put it on a weekend so everyone can enjoy it?
Trade deadline day came in like a lamb and went out like a house cat (but a really angry one) and it was all good fun for those of us immersed in its machinations.

If Curtis Joseph’s NHL career indeed comes to an end at the conclusion of this season, he’ll retire with the fourth-most goalie wins of all-time and a giant question begging to be answered: has he done enough to be inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame?
Most people I talk to instinctively say no.
