NHL teams wise to play cautious with prospects

History has proven that slowly developing your young players is always the better option than bringing them along too quickly.
NEW YORK – Exactly what a player such as Nino Niederreiter has done to merit making a trade demand is one of the great mysteries of this season.

Even after losing a star, New Jersey hasn't missed a beat. But, really, should anyone be surprised anymore?
NEWARK – Contrary to popular belief, the New Jersey Devils are not a bunch of automatons. Too much personality. But you’d be excused for thinking that GM Lou Lamoriello spends his time in some elaborate control room in the Prudential Center meticulously guiding all the movements of his players.

While New York's top line will do most of the heavy lifting, if Michael Grabner can lead a strong secondary unit, this team should see improvement.
UNIONDALE – Unlike most NHL teams, the New York Islanders do not hold an annual skills competition. Stop it, now. That’s not nice.

With so many young stars, the Penguins' window for a championship should remain open for a long time, if they remain healthy.
NEW YORK – For each and every road game this season, the Pittsburgh Penguins will have one of their own team doctors in tow. With a roster this valuable and this prone to serious injuries, they obviously want all their medical angles covered by someone they trust.

Travis Zajac's new contract and Ted Leonsis' proclamation show that, no matter what, the players always come out on top.
It was the opinion of many in the hockey industry – this corner included – that it didn’t really matter what the final result of the collective bargaining agreement negotiations turned out to be because the players would come out ahead anyway.

Starting with the Brian Burke firing, George Cope and the other new Toronto bosses are immediately putting their stamp on the franchise.
In our recent issue ranking the Top 100 People of Power and Influence in hockey, we had George Cope at No. 26 and Brian Burke at 22. Oops.

It appears the Flyers are, in fact, interested in acquiring Roberto Luongo, which is a move they should be looking into making at the start of this CBA.
For the record, Philadelphia Flyers GM Paul Holmgren has categorically denied having any interest in entering the Roberto Luongo Sweepstakes.

Why Maple Leafs GM Brian Burke deserved to be fired

Why Maple Leafs GM Brian Burke deserved to be fired

by Ken Campbell - January 9, 2013 5:10 PM EST

After more than four years on the job and no playoff games to show for it, the brash GM didn't do enough to keep his job.
Whether it was because of his personality or his performance, Brian Burke deserved to be fired. It’s as simple as that, really. Let’s start with personality.

Why the dismissal of the long-standing commissioner would be the first step towards healing the NHL's relationship with its fans.
It’s impossible to determine whether all of this would have/could have been avoided if someone other than Gary Bettman had been occupying the commissioner’s chair in the NHL office for the past two decades.

NHL, NHLPA look foolish during negotiations

Whether it's head games or outrageous, inconsistent demands, both sides in this lockout are getting more ridiculous by the day.
Since the beginning of this lockout, your trusty correspondent has done his level best to respect the process. At no time did I ever think the lockout was needless or silly or all about egos or settling scores.

The least the nHL could do for its fans is go ahead with approving their involvement in a best-on-best tournament every four years.
It would come as no surprise if NHL Players’ Association executive director Don Fehr spends the next couple of days trying to wring more out of the NHL’s latest offer.

Fifteen promises for 2013

Fifteen promises for 2013

NHL players should resolve to stop making themselves look bad on Twitter. And I’ll aim to do likewise now that I’ve finally signed up.
Assuming you’re reading this, the end of the 5,125-year “Long Count” Mayan calendar – which coincided with Lou Lamoriello becoming the GM of the New Jersey Devils when they were established – did not mean the end of the world.

Which team trailing 3-1 in their series is most likely to come back and win?

"Probably not. Their depth and our play right now...it doesn't look too good."

- Ottawa Senators captain Daniel Alfredsson, when asked if his team could come back from a 3-1 series deficit against the Pittsburgh Penguins.
