When Ian Laperriere, the league's toughest player, realizes it's time to take a step back, the whole hockey world should take notice.
I like Ian Laperriere, as a player and as a person, quite a bit. In fact, I was one of the chief advocates for giving the Flyers’ winger THN’s now-annual award as the toughest player in the NHL last season.

Being employed to write about hockey is a fun job to have, but it's not as glamorous as it may seem, so here's a quiz to see if it's something you'd enjoy doing.
I get a number of inquiries, on a regular basis, from teenagers and 20-somethings interested in becoming hockey journalists. Last week we saw the East, so this week Adam unveils his picks for the order of finish in the West.
Sometimes, when I feel as if I haven’t been sufficiently denigrated (or had my mom’s marriage status at the time of my birth questioned) by denizens of cyberspace, I remind myself, “Proteau, hang tight for a few more days/weeks/months, because soon enough, it’ll be pre-season prediction time.

The Southeast Division has been made the butt of jokes for years, but seems to be turning a corner; and other thoughts from around the league.
In honor of the upcoming Labor Day weekend, I’ve labored (and failed) to come up with one full-length Thursday column. Instead, here are some more compacted thoughts on late-summer NHL news:
• The Southeast Division has been dumped on in recent years - and I’ve participated in a good amount of the dumping.

With the expected arrival of Donald Fehr as executive director of the NHLPA many fear another lockout, but there are plenty of reasons to the contrary.
By all accounts, the billionaire’s boogeyman, Don Fehr, is on the verge of becoming the new executive director of the NHL Players’ Association.

While it's fun to make predictions and break down expectations, a season is often won and lost on an unexpected twist.
As an information provider, I should on some level be pleased we’re living in the Information Age. But I have many levels – and at least a couple of them can see some downside in the maelstrom of media content we’ve created.

Because the women's game doesn't get the credit it deserves, Adam Proteau has an idea to give the women more exposure.
Reality TV shows: can’t live with ’em, can’t avoid ’em even if you faked your own death and moved to a Luddite-only locale.

Far from a household name, the Coyotes enforcer had some of the most intriguing Twitter messages until his account mysteriously disappeared.
I feel bad for Paul Bissonnette today. But I feel worse for the rest of us.
In case you weren’t aware, Bissonnette – by night, a gritty plugger for the Phoenix Coyotes and more recently, a hilarious chronicler of the hockey-and-non-hockey world – de-activated his wildly popular Twitter account Wednesday.

If Simon Gagne is available for trade, the Lightning will certainly make a call. However, the Flyers scorer won't make or break Yzerman's team.
The Tampa Bay Lightning may or may not be interested in the services of left winger Simon Gagne. However, in my mind, the Bolts’ playoff hopes don’t hinge on acquiring the Flyers sniper.

Watching the NBA free agency period has made it abundantly clear why hockey fans find it so much easier to connect with players.
I rag on NHL players a lot – and with good reason. Their boring nicknames roll off an assembly line, they’re far from the most worldly of individuals, and their union-maintaining abilities leave much to be desired.

Last week we looked at the West, so this week we look at the East in an annual tradition of breaking down each team's season.
Once again, it’s time for this space’s year-end tradition of selecting a real-life movie title and critic’s review (from www.

“I think when you’re at home the first two games, sometimes you get a little bit too comfortable at home. Then you come on the road, maybe it’s like a rude awakening…We’ve had three series to figure that out, learn it. We definitely want to be better (Monday), especially in the first game on the road.”
