With Gauthier out as GM, Canadiens need new image

Whoever takes over as GM of the Montreal Canadiens, he'll need to make up for lost time under Gauthier in what will be a long, difficult job.
The announcement that Pierre Gauthier was fired as GM of the Montreal Canadiens came with the same odd sense of timing that marked the man’s tenure as architect of one of hockey’s most storied franchises.

NHL must send message through supplemental discipline

The NFL, another league with player safety issues, isn't afraid to dish out big penalties and neither should the NHL be.
In all my time at The Hockey News, I’ve rarely met an NHLer who was more of a stand-up guy than Blackhawks defenseman Duncan Keith. The first time I spoke with him – at the 2009 Winter Classic in Chicago – I mentioned I wrote for THN and Keith immediately perked up in a show of respect for the publication.

Howson's handling of trade deadline will bite Blue Jackets

When the Blue Jackets GM announced it was Rick Nash who asked for a trade, he set off a string of events that will end with Columbus not getting enough for its star player.
I was prepared to defend Scott Howson right through Monday’s 3 p.m. NHL trade deadline. Then the Columbus GM stepped to the podium after it was over, opened his mouth and praise-proofed himself in the saga of the Blue Jackets’ now forever-fractured relationship with franchise cornerstone Rick Nash.

When Graham James is sentenced for his crimes, it's not about how long it's for, but what lessons we learn.
When Graham James is sentenced to prison for his heinous crimes, there will be no shortage of people arguing the penalty he got was too light, no matter what the punishment winds up being.

Team-by-team buyout candidates, Pt. 2

Team-by-team buyout candidates, Pt. 2

by Adam Proteau - February 16, 2012 2:35 PM EST

If the new CBA includes an amnesty buyout, which player on your team would be picked and what are the chances of it happening?
There remains talk among some NHL agents that the league’s next collective bargaining agreement will include a provision allowing the opportunity for each team to “amnesty” one unwieldy player contract from its salary cap books without any penalty other than the financial buyout itself.

Every NHL team has something to be sorry for so Adam Proteau does it for them in this week's column.
The Montreal Canadiens raised eyebrows around the hockey world after issuing an apology for hiring a unilingual head coach to replace the fired Jacques Martin.

THN at the All-Star Game: Bettman, Fehr play down CBA doom

After the board of governors meeting, Gary Bettman and Donald Fehr both spoke to the media about CBA talks.
OTTAWA – After the NHL Board of Governors meetings finished up late Saturday morning, league commissioner Gary Bettman was more than willing to share the good news – namely, that the league is heading toward record revenues and attendance and that the city of Columbus was awarded hosting duties for the 2013 All-Star Game – but was less willing to talk pessimistically or aggressively when it came to some of his business’ tender areas.

Adam Proteau sat down with Donald Fehr for a story in a recent issue of THN and we present the interview in its entirety.
After a year on the job as executive director of the NHL Players’ Association, Donald Fehr is as calm as he ever was during his 26 years running Major League Baseball’s players union.

Combine All-Star Game with Winter Classic

Combine All-Star Game with Winter Classic

by Adam Proteau - January 19, 2012 1:30 PM EST

Putting the All-Star Game outdoors would create a new buzz around the event that currently doesn't mean much to most hockey fans.
There’s a lot to like about the NHL’s massively successful Winter Classic experiment. There’s not as much to like about the NHL’s All-Star Game weekend.

Why is Scott Howson still employed by Columbus?

Why is Scott Howson still employed by Columbus?

by Adam Proteau - January 12, 2012 1:45 PM EST

While a coach has many hockey people over his head that determine his fate, the GM is in more control.
When Scott Arniel was made to walk the Blue Jackets’ plank Monday, some felt it was unfair GM Scott Howson didn’t join his now-former coach wearing the latest in sandwich board couture on the unemployment lines.

Scott Arniel wasn't given chance to succeed in Columbus

With injuries, suspensions and many other problems getting in the way, the Blue Jackets, and their coach, never stood a chance.
It’s hard for him to see at the moment, but Scott Arniel’s luck got a lot better with his dismissal as Columbus Blue Jackets head coach Monday.
