Would the NHL return to Hartford?

Would the NHL return to Hartford?

by Adam Proteau - November 17, 2011 11:25 AM EST

While Quebec City and a few other places have been mentioned in relocation talk, Hartford is an under-the-radar market.
If the NHL can return a franchise to Winnipeg – and be poised to bring one back to les gens merveilleux of Quebec City – is a return to another former World Hockey Association city possible? In the cases of Cincinnati, Cleveland, Houston, Indianapolis, Baltimore, San Diego, Birmingham and San Francisco, probably not.

Action towards change needed at GM level

Action towards change needed at GM level

A lot of talking is done at the GM meetings, but nothing ever seems to happen.
A typical NHL GM meeting takes place in the beige, nondescript conference room bubble of an airport hotel. And the typical result of the six or seven hours of discussions on current issues usually feels just as artificial.

Rick Nash best served by move out of Columbus

Rick Nash best served by move out of Columbus

It's become clear after another horrific start that it's time for the Blue Jackets and Rick Nash to part ways.
In professional sports parlance, trade requests made by athletes are the equivalent of Marie Antoinette’s “let them eat cake” dismissal of her royal subjects.

Time for Flames to trade Iginla, Kiprusoff

Time for Flames to trade Iginla, Kiprusoff

by Adam Proteau - November 3, 2011 3:42 PM EDT

It's been debated for the past year, but if the Flames don't blow it up now, it'll be a tougher road in the long run.
I hope you’re sitting down, because the following sentence may blow out your kneecaps as well as your mind: It’s time to blow up the Calgary Flames.

Hockey culture lingers in the past

Hockey culture lingers in the past

The recent hazing incident, the visor debate and more are examples of where hockey is behind modern society.
Sometimes I think of the hockey establishment/culture and society at large as two neighboring tectonic plates, squeezing up against each other from time to time and causing the game’s ground to quake when they do.

NHL trade verdicts best left to history

NHL trade verdicts best left to history

Phil Kessel, Semyon Varlamov, Dany Heatley and Brent Burns were all part of controversial trades, but in the end, we won't know who won for years.
Last year, a former NHLer and alumnus of the Toronto Maple Leafs called me to talk about Phil Kessel, who at the time was stumbling through a scoreless streak and, as usual to that point in his career, was an absolute non-factor in terms of backchecking and defense.

NHL should do away with divisions

Realignment is coming and it's time the slow-moving NHL picks up the pace and moves into the modern era by ditching divisions.

Welcoming the NHL back with open arms

Welcoming the NHL back with open arms

by Adam Proteau - October 6, 2011 12:15 PM EDT

After a difficult summer, it's great to finally have the game we all love back for another year.
Spend enough of your life covering the professional hockey business and you’re bound to get a little jaded. We don’t forget how fortunate we are, but it’s only natural the demands of your job encroach on and dilute the love for the game you had as a kid.

My NHL predictions - East

My NHL predictions - East

by Adam Proteau - September 22, 2011 3:22 PM EDT

After running down his picks for the West last week, Adam Proteau tells you who he thinks will make the playoffs in 2012.
Yes, it’s time for my pre-season predictions - the time when many of you write in angrily accusing me of hating your team (or jinxing it by praising it too much) and when I giggle quietly to myself at the lather many of you have worked yourself into.

Who's bound for the playoffs and who's bound for the basement? Who the heck knows for sure...but here's what Adam Proteau thinks.

Current NHL issues vindicate Eric Lindros

Current NHL issues vindicate Eric Lindros

by Adam Proteau - September 8, 2011 2:50 PM EDT

Once a can't-miss prospect, Eric Lindros dealt with concussions and injuries his entire career that ended up foreshadowing what was to come.
As part of Sidney Crosby’s health update press conference Wednesday, the Penguins superstar came out with his strongest condemnation of head shots in the game.

The reality behind hockey players

The reality behind hockey players

by Adam Proteau - September 1, 2011 1:05 PM EDT

Far from being the untouchable idols they're often painted as, NHLers face the same difficulties any of us do.
I remember the first time I realized NHL players weren’t superhuman immortals: the day Pelle Lindbergh died in a horrific car crash. It was November of 1985 and I was a 13-year-old who thought the world of guys who could play the game at its ultimate level.

All things considered, how would you rate this NHL season?

“I think when you’re at home the first two games, sometimes you get a little bit too comfortable at home. Then you come on the road, maybe it’s like a rude awakening…We’ve had three series to figure that out, learn it. We definitely want to be better (Monday), especially in the first game on the road.”

- Chicago's Patrick Kane. The Blackhawks are 0-3 in Game 3s this playoff.
