Mislav Jantoljak, Zagreb, Croatia Why does the NHL kickoff the season in Europe? Where should I start? First off, European buildings were full of so-called non-caring European folk, which is more than I can say for New York (Islanders), New Jersey, Atlanta, Colorado or Phoenix.

Josh Barr, Flin Flon, Man. I cannot believe some of the criticism towards players making clean backchecking hits. This new rule of blindside hits eliminates hits to the head, not hits to players who aren't paying attention.

Brandon Sparks, Fredericton, N.B. I never thought I'd say this, but I had the pleasure of watching the Florida Panthers on their season-opening trip across Western Canada.

Rob Fox, Halifax, N.S. I loved Ryan Kennedy's article arguing Gary Bettman's expansion into the sunbelt was a success. Yeah, it hurt to lose our Canadian teams in Winnipeg and Quebec City and, yeah, Southern Ontario has been kept off the map for a second team, but Bettman deserves some credit for expanding the game in the U.

Andrew Miller, Kingston, Ont. The line between blindside hits and blindside head shots seems to be a very grey area in the NHL. If a player delivers a deliberate elbow or shoulder to the head of their opponent's blind side, they should be penalized and possibly suspended depending on the severity of the hit.

Kenneth MacMillan, Halifax, N.B. I just finished reading your special edition, Top 100 Players of All-Time by Position. It was a great read, but I can't help but feel Ron Francis deserves to be on your list.

Brianne Smith, Calgary I was disappointed to open my latest hockey news and see that you published a letter from a fan telling Carey Price to "grow up.

Bernard Levesque, Montreal Shame on you, Rick Rypien! How can the league expect to sell the sport if professional players have run-ins with fans? How could you ask players to respect each other on ice if they did not respect the consumer, the fan who paid their salaries? I read Manny Malhotra defending his teammate and that's fine.

Jim Fix, Williamsville, N.Y. Why does everyone with a solution to the NHL's points system want to hand out extra points left and right? It's bad enough players like Martin Brodeur are padding their win totals with the shootout gimmick.

Lloyd Barrett, Bay Roberts, Nfld. Here is one man’s solution to solve the overtime/shootout problem in the NHL. First we need to get back to the basics.
