Fantasy Pool Look: Purcell propels poolies

Teddy Purcell has arrived with the Tampa Bay Lightning, so if you waited on him, it's finally paying off.
It took Teddy Purcell four years to become fantasy relevant, but it took him just one more to become a star. As is often the case when it comes to undrafted college stars, poolies (and possibly Los Angeles GM Dean Lombardi, too) expected immediate dividends.

Fantasy Pool Look: David Desharnais

Little David Desharnais is making a big impact; Derick Brassard and Matt Read are on the uptick as well.
I love it when a dark horse’s fantasy progress can be tracked through older columns. I love it even more when that player is smallish, undrafted and pretty much has clawed his way into stardom.

Looking at eight players who saw their fantasy value impacted by trades.
It was, by all accounts, a slow trade deadline day. But if you take things back a week or so, some interesting players changed addresses and impacted their fantasy value.

Who says the Blues lack offense? With the emerging Alex Pietrangelo on the back end it's steadily improving.
Well, that didn’t take long. In just his second full NHL campaign, St. Louis rearguard Alex Pietrangelo has launched himself into the elite group of blueliners.

The Senators star is second in league scoring and here's why you can expect more; plus Marcel Goc.
There’s a new entrant in the NHL scoring race. Coming out of nowhere, he’s banged off 12 points in his past four games to slide into second place.

Fantasy Pool Look: Goalie vs. System

Fantasy Pool Look: Goalie vs. System

by Darryl Dobbs - February 13, 2012 3:22 PM EST

It's not always about how talented the goalie is, but what team he plays for and what the situation is.
The goaltending position is the most important in fantasy hockey. Hey, that sounds just like real hockey, doesn’t it? At the draft you need to make certain you are covered at G, because in rotisserie leagues that position is usually responsible for 30 to 40 percent of the categories.

Fantasy Pool Look: Poolies must evolve

As the goal-scoring rate in the NHL goes up or down, fantasy owners must adapt to get the best value.
The NHL is constantly shifting and I have some statistics to back this up that will make your eyes pop out of your head. As a fantasy owner, it is your responsibility to change your mindset and adapt to the way things are shifting.

Which youngster has the best "fantasy" upside?
I recently watched a game on TSN and during the intermission the hockey panel, consisting of Darren Dreger, Marc Crawford and Aaron Ward, was asked by host James Duthie to rank four young stars in terms of who will have the best career.

Our pool expert looks at some players who have seen their production drop and analyzes what will happen next.
So do you look at the cup as half full, or half empty? Artem Anisimov is pointless in 2012, which is either terrible…or it’s just early.

Fantasy Pool Look: Analyzing injuries

Fantasy Pool Look: Analyzing injuries

Who will be back, who might be back, and who needs the all-star break rest to recover from injury?
Many teams get a six-day break (Detroit and Montreal are stuck with only five) for all-star weekend and this is just what the doctor ordered for players who are nursing injuries, but close to a return.

Fantasy Pool Look: Mueller's back, but for how long?

Fantasy Pool Look: Mueller's back, but for how long?

by Darryl Dobbs - January 23, 2012 1:40 PM EST

Examining Peter Mueller's risk and reward; David Backes is a beast.
Peter Mueller has returned to hockey. The real Peter Mueller, not the unproductive one who made a brief appearance back in October. But is he back from his concussion now in the sense Patrice Bergeron is back? Or is he back in the sense Sidney Crosby was back? Mueller had high expectations 16 months ago after posting 20 points in just 15 games after joining the Avalanche in 2010.

Which team will win Game 4 of the Stanley Cup final?

"If we do pick first, we're leaning more toward one of those three forwards."

- Colorado's executive vice president of hockey operations, Joe Sakic, on what the Avalanche plan to do with the first overall pick at the June 30 entry draft. Many were expecting Colorado to take defenseman Seth Jones.
