Which youngster has the best "fantasy" upside?
I recently watched a game on TSN and during the intermission the hockey panel, consisting of Darren Dreger, Marc Crawford and Aaron Ward, was asked by host James Duthie to rank four young stars in terms of who will have the best career.

Our pool expert looks at some players who have seen their production drop and analyzes what will happen next.
So do you look at the cup as half full, or half empty? Artem Anisimov is pointless in 2012, which is either terrible…or it’s just early.

Who will be back, who might be back, and who needs the all-star break rest to recover from injury?
Many teams get a six-day break (Detroit and Montreal are stuck with only five) for all-star weekend and this is just what the doctor ordered for players who are nursing injuries, but close to a return.

Examining Peter Mueller's risk and reward; David Backes is a beast.
Peter Mueller has returned to hockey. The real Peter Mueller, not the unproductive one who made a brief appearance back in October. But is he back from his concussion now in the sense Patrice Bergeron is back? Or is he back in the sense Sidney Crosby was back?
Mueller had high expectations 16 months ago after posting 20 points in just 15 games after joining the Avalanche in 2010.

Matt Moulson wasn't ever much of a prospect, so his rise to a first-line producer was extremely quick.
He was a 25-year-old, ninth round pick who had 29 NHL and 188 American League games under his belt. And even though he had 160 points in his AHL contests, Matt Moulson was looking like one of hundreds of other players throughout history – a career minor-leaguer.

Power play time is a good indicator of who's over-performing and who's primed for an up-tick.
As anyone worth his or her salt in the fantasy hockey world knows, a player’s value leans heavily on his power play ice time and subsequent PP performance.

Is the gritty Flame becoming more than a grinder?; plus don't dress against the Blues or Bruins.
When Curtis Glencross signed a four-year extension in May, pundits figured it was another unnecessary long-term deal given to a player by the Flames.

The Penguins have been bombarded with injuries, so what can you do to salvage your fantasy team?
Players are dropping like flies in Steeltown and the fantasy hockey world will feel the effects. Over the past 18 months, the Penguins have dealt with a lot of key injuries.

Raphael Diaz came out of nowhere and has been producing for the Habs of late, so what does this mean for his fantasy value?
There’s a defenseman in Montreal who is slowly entering the fantasy scene. Actually, “slowly” is a relative term, given he was pretty much an unknown player just three months ago.

Six NHLers who've failed to meet expectations in Year 2 and what you'll get from them in the future.
A couple of years ago, for THN’s Ultimate Pool Guide, I researched all of the rookies since the lockout and analyzed how they did as sophomores.

It's been a long time coming, but Vrbata's finally reached his potential. Really.
Don’t you hate it when you’re really high on a player and you stick with him through thick and thin, far longer than most people in their right mind would have before finally giving up on him, only to see him arrive as a point producer later on? Radim Vrbata, where have you been?
My Vrbata love-in over the years:
March 31, 2006
I noted he had 24 points in 30 games with Chicago and called that 66-point pace something that we could expect the following season.

Led by its first line, New Jersey's offense is starting to roll just in time for the return of Travis Zajac, plus more.
Excuse Zach Parise for not flying out of the gate this year after missing the majority of last season with a knee injury. And excuse Ilya Kovalchuk for…well, OK, there’s no excuse for Kovalchuk.

"Right when I hit the deck, I knew there was no way I was getting up and I was yelling, 'Heads, heads, heads.’ I knew he had his back turned to me and that ended up happening…I think we're lucky it wasn't worse than it really is."
- Buffalo defenseman Jordan Leopold on his accident during practice with coach Lindy Ruff, who sustained three broken ribs.
