A case for Umberger

A case for Umberger

by Adam Proteau - March 27, 2009 1:39 PM EDT

In the end-of-week mailbag: Umberger on Team USA; what's special about Svensson; and a little role reversal.
Was I the only one who did a double-take after reading that 420 (!!!) NHLers had agreed to “go green” this year? Olympic athlete watchdog Dick Pound isn’t going to be pleased by this at all.

Over and out

Over and out

by The Hockey News - March 20, 2009 9:29 AM EDT

THN answers readers questions on Radulov, the Isles future, Mikita-Hull's linemate, first U.S. playoff hat trick, and more.
Adam Proteau is out mentally preparing himself for the stretch drive, so for this week’s mailbag we turn to other members of THN’s esteemed staff.

Wake-up call

Wake-up call

by Adam Proteau - March 13, 2009 1:02 PM EDT

What's with the NHL's double standard?... Smelling salts?... Clemmensen mistreated? These questions and more in the mailbag.
Some people say to me, “Adam, how do you not go Steve Downie-level insane trying to come up with a different lead paragraph for your mailbag column every week?” I never answer them, because I’m too busy trying to come up with a different lead paragraph for my mailbag column every week.

The long road

The long road

by Adam Proteau - March 6, 2009 2:10 PM EST

Proteau answers readers' questions on undrafted players, Conn Smythe winners, the Winter Classic, and more.
It feels like the first day of spring in Toronto on this lovely Friday and that development – along with the fact I won’t have to deal with trade rumors until after the Stanley Cup is decided – puts me in a cheery mood.

Dead line

Dead line

by Adam Proteau - February 27, 2009 12:24 PM EST

Proteau rids his mailbox of accumulated absurd trade rumors and scenarios.
This here is the final mailbag column prior to the March 4 trade deadline, so I figured I’d get as many of those questions – most of which were nuttier than a squirrel’s winter storage facility – out of the way.

Group effort

Group effort

by The Hockey News - February 20, 2009 1:50 PM EST

The THN team steps in to answer questions on Lidstrom, the Penguins, Vs. horns, Hedman, the Canadiens, and more.
With Mr. Proteau taking a week off, we turn the mailbag reins over to the capable hands of THN staffers. Regularly scheduled Ask Adaming will return Feb.

Friendly fire

Friendly fire

by Adam Proteau - February 13, 2009 11:02 AM EST

Proteau answers reader questions about how Pronger would look in a Caps jersey; how to become a GM; and taking the MLB approach.
This week’s mailbag is the final regular one for a couple weeks, as I’m taking the next five workdays off for one massive power nap before the trade deadline kookery really gets underway.

Old is new again

Old is new again

by Adam Proteau - February 6, 2009 11:15 AM EST

Philly's goaltending? How can you like Slap Shot? Pre-season ASG? Jagr to the Pens? These questions and more answered in the mailbag.
This week’s mailbag column is (not really) sponsored by the movie Taken, starring Liam Neeson and co-starring his awesomely glued-on, fire-truck red toupee.

Net gains

Net gains

by Adam Proteau - January 30, 2009 2:58 PM EST

Proteau answers questions about the Red Wings goalie situation, UFA deadlines, promoting fighting, and more.
This week’s mailbag is all about fighting in hockey! That’s a joke; I employed it in the hope of frightening off all the humorless, pro-fisticuff fascists scared out of their shorts at the prospect of a continuing debate on the issue.

Pace yourself

Pace yourself

by Adam Proteau - January 23, 2009 9:48 AM EST

In the mailbag this week: Can Carter win the scoring race? What's the instigator rule? Dubinsky a Flame? And more.
By the time you read this, I’ll be in beautiful Montreal, doing sportswriter stretches (hint: they start and end with a bent elbow and a pint or 10 of beer) and preparing for Sunday’s “big” NHL All-Star Game.

Short and sweet

Short and sweet

by Adam Proteau - January 16, 2009 2:05 PM EST

In this week's mailbag: Who's the best team? When will Gary get the boot? And where does Modano rank?
Yeesh, you people (what do I mean, “you people” – sorry, but I’m having difficulty getting that Tropic Thunder joke out of my head) sure do send in a lot of great questions.

Moving forward

Moving forward

by The Hockey News - January 9, 2009 11:34 AM EST

THN's staff answers questions on the shootout spin-o-rama, David Krejci, all-time wins, home jerseys, and more.
With Adam Proteau enjoying his last week of vacation, we take a team effort to this week’s mailbag. On to your questions: Hey Adam, I was reading one of your fellow expert's columns the other day and was wondering why the NHL doesn't count shootout goals towards a player's individual stats? Wouldn't it make sense since this shootout format is designed to determine the outcome of a lot of games during the season and nothing that happens in it counts for anything other than an extra point in the standings? At the very least the winning shootout goal should count for the player who scored it.

Who should the Vancouver Canucks hire as their new head coach?

"Probably not. Their depth and our play right now...it doesn't look too good."

- Ottawa Senators captain Daniel Alfredsson, when asked if his team could come back from a 3-1 series deficit against the Pittsburgh Penguins.
