The Los Angeles Kings are on fire and home to the league's leading scorer, but it's the defending champs on top.
Two guys who are (kind of) the face of hockey in their nation have the L.A. Kings rolling.
You won’t get much of an argument that Anze Kopitar is the king of Slovenian hockey, especially since he’s stormed out to the league scoring lead with 10 goals and 21 points in 12 games.

The Penguins take over top spot; do the Canucks have the guts to overcome life without a Sedin?
Ok Henrik, now’s your chance.
Losing Daniel Sedin for up to six weeks with a broken foot is definitely bad news for the Vancouver Canucks, but could turn out to be a terrific development for his brother Henrik – assuming the twins have money on which one ends his NHL career with more points.

Philly may be No. 1, but with a quick 2-0 start to the season, Colorado has knocked off two big contenders to kick off 2009-10.
Joe who?
OK, let’s not get crazy, but let’s also give fans of the Colorado Avalanche a chance to be a little excited here.
A 2-0 start probably isn’t indicative of how the Avs will fare this season, especially with the team set to play 11 of its next 13 on the road.

In our season-end edition of the power rankings, the B's take the top spot, but many eyes are on the Devils.
It’s hard to imagine a team finishing with a franchise-record 51 wins and the league’s fifth-best record being in the midst of a downer, but that’s where the Devils are heading into the playoffs.

With one week to go in the regular season a familiar team sits on top, while the Nashville Predators make a late push.
Lots will be made in the season’s final week about teams like St. Louis, Columbus and Florida trying to make either their first playoff appearance in a long time or, in the Jackets’ case, ever.

A new No. 1 emerges in THN's power rankings while the Blues continue their climb up the ladder.
Are we witnessing the start of a new St. Louis streak?
The Blues made the playoffs every year from 1979-80 through 2003-04. And while none of those berths resulted in so much as a trip to the Cup final, it’s still a stretch worth saluting.

The Wings are back at No. 1, but a late-season surge has the Hurricanes looking to do some damage.
About a month ago, Pittsburgh was the team everybody talked about as a tough draw for one of the East’s high seeds in the first round of the playoffs.

Playoffs are out of the question, but the Thrashers and Islanders are putting together solid runs to close out the campaign.
Becoming the Ontario League’s all-time leading goal-scorer did nothing to endear John Tavares to the Atlanta Thrashers or New York Islanders.

The Devils continue to hold down the No. 1 spot, but the Pens jump 12 positions and look like they're back on track.
A couple of weeks ago, people were talking about Pittsburgh’s potential to do some damage in the first round of the playoffs.
Maybe it’s time to shorten that statement to ‘Pittsburgh’s potential to do damage in the playoffs.

New Jersey may be No. 1 in our weekly rankings of the 30 NHL clubs, but all five Central Division teams are in the top 14.
As of Monday morning, four Central Division teams had identical 6-3-1 records in their past 10 games. The fifth team, St. Louis, really deviated from the pack with a 6-2-2 mark.

Our weekly rankings are shifting and the Hawks are starting to look like potential Western Conference champs.
If there’s a team ready to exploit a seam in the West, it’s the Chicago Blackhawks.
The Detroit Red Wings and San Jose Sharks are clearly the top two clubs in the Western Conference, but neither one of them has looked bulletproof this year.

Who should start in goal for Russia at the Olympics?
“I was coming in to take the boards away and had some good jump. He bobbled the puck at the last second and I don’t think he saw me coming at all. It was a shoulder right in his chest. He’s eight feet tall, so it’s not like you could hit him in the head.”
