William Wallen of the OHL's Mississauga-St.Michael's Majors came to Canada to chase the NHL dream, but was challenged with much more.
It began with a headache like none he’d ever had. Then came the vomiting. Soon he was in the back of an ambulance. Within two weeks, he had two brain surgeries; that was early October.

NHL GMs have a knack for overpaying blueliners on the free agent market. Just look at what happened last July.
Every summer, NHL GMs fall all over themselves to woo unrestricted free agents. And every summer, NHL GMs fall on their faces by wooing unrestricted free agents.

By tinkering with their roster at the right time of year the Penguins may have found a new way to stay competitive each season.
The Pittsburgh Penguins are on fire; 10-1-3 since interim coach Dan Bylsma took over Feb. 15 from the fired Michel Therrien. Pittsburgh’s run has the team firmly – or as firmly as any club not in the Eastern Conference’s top three can be – in the playoffs and even threatening for home ice in the first round after a suspect start to the season.

As a last-ditch effort to save the centennial season, the Habs GM took on the role of head coach Monday.
In November, while the season was beginning swimmingly for the Canadiens, I offered a blog of caution, urging people not to get too excited by Montreal’s hot streak; going so far as to compare the Habs to the 2007-08 Senators.

From GMs to players to fans, the hours leading up to the trade deadline are a whirlwind of action and emotion.
“They say the anticipation of death is worse than death itself, it’s the same thing with the trade deadline.”
That’s how Toronto’s Brad May described deadline day for NHL players when THN.

There was no fanfare for his return to Toronto, but getting 'dirty' will go a long way toward making his stay in Vancouver a memorable one.
You know it’s an emotional night when you can feel it in the press box, where cheering and favoritism of any sort are traditionally verboten.

Bringing back the 39-year-old blueliner for a second tour of duty solidifies the 'D' corps for a small price.
For 39-year-old defenseman Mathieu Schneider, it must have been like St. Peter calling his name over the purgatory loudspeaker. Atlanta traded the veteran of 20 seasons and a conditional draft pick (either a third-, fourth- or fifth-rounder) to Montreal on Monday for a second round draft selection in 2009 (which was actually Atlanta’s to begin with, but was moved to Washington and then to Montreal) and a 2010 third round pick.

The exciting atmosphere during the Champions League final between Zurich and Magnitogorsk should be emulated by NHL fans.
Was channel-surfing Sunday afternoon and came across The Score’s tape-delayed broadcast of the Zurich Lions’ Champions League final victory over Metallurg Magnitogorsk.

While St. Louis has a kid line taking the NHL by storm, the Devils have a veteran line led by the comeback of a legendary power forward.
Watched some of the Detroit-St.Louis game on Versus last night. The panel was gushing over the Blues’ kid line of Patrik Berglund between T.

Perhaps it's time to change the focus of the fight debate to keeping our kids safe... and some happy thoughts on the ASG weekend.
I hate to harp on fighting in hockey. I know it has been addressed by many throughout the hockey world, including myself. And I know many of you are sick of the debate.

The possibility of agitators and cheap-shot artists running amok has to be considered in the fight-removal debate.
I grew up hearing legends of players like The Rocket and Mr. Hockey; players who were the best of their time, but were tough as nails and took care of themselves.

Having every team represented already makes getting every deserving player in the ASG tough and having fans vote only makes it worse.
The NHL has reached the tipping point with All-Star Game fan voting. It needs to be scrapped. Now.
With the league insisting all 30 teams be represented, the game is already watered-down.

"Probably not. Their depth and our play right now...it doesn't look too good."
