If the current trend continues, the Eastern Conference will establish an ignominious first in NHL history this season. Never before has one conference or division had its top team finish lower than sixth overall. And the only time that happened was in 1967-68 and 1969-70 when all the expansion teams were grouped in the same division.

To know Drew Doughty on and off the ice is to know two different people. Away from hockey, he’s affable, easygoing and downright charismatic. But strap skates on him and he becomes one of the most ferocious and dynamic players in the game.
When he and Wayne Simmonds, now of the Philadelphia Flyers, were teammates in Los Angeles, they were also roommates for a couple years and no friendship is immune to bumps in the road.

The Minnesota Wild have employed Jason Pominville for only six months and 10 regular season games, but team management loves what it has seen, signing the veteran right winger to a five-year, $28-million contract extension Thursday morning.
