The Dallas Stars missed the playoffs by six points last season and took an aggressive approach to their off-season dealings. Out went Mike Ribeiro, Sheldon Souray, Steve Ott and Adam Burish - and in came Derek Roy, Jaromir Jagr, Ray Whitney and Cody Eakin. The question is, are those moves enough to shoot the Stars back to the playoffs for the first time since 2007-08?

The once-Mighty Ducks fell to 13th in the West last season as star centre Ryan Getzlaf struggled and Hart Trophy winner Corey Perry couldn't replicate his MVP caliber season. Finishing at 35-37-10, Toronto landed the fifth overall selection in the NHL draft, but their sights were set much higher than that. GM Brian Burke is entering his fifth season as GM and, if his team fails to perform again, he could be on the firing line at the end of the season.
Twenty-nine NHL teams have made the post-season since the last lockout in 2004-05: the Toronto Maple Leafs are the one team left out.

After enduring two lockouts as a member of The Hockey News staff, and feeling particularly raw in 2004-05 when we lost an entire season, I decided not to over-invest myself emotionally in the CBA follies this time around.
