NHL locks out players as CBA expires

As the deadline passed to strike a new CBA deal, the NHL enters its second lockout in seven years.
When the moment of truth arrived, the NHL and NHL Players' Association were nowhere near the bargaining table. The sides remained so far apart in negotiations that no last-ditch attempt was even made before the league entered its fourth work stoppage in 20 years.

After enduring two lockouts as a member of The Hockey News staff, and feeling particularly raw in 2004-05 when we lost an entire season, I decided not to over-invest myself emotionally in the CBA follies this time around.
