THN.com Blog: Surging San Jose Sharks back atop the food chain

It took nearly half the season for the Sharks to kick it into gear, but now that they have, they sit atop their division once again.
When the San Jose Sharks woke up the morning of Jan. 14 they were floating in unchartered waters. Recognized as the poster team for regular season success, San Jose was more whale shark than tiger shark at the season’s mid-point, winning fewer than half their games and languishing in 12th place in the Western Conference.

Analysts and fans who use incidents like the Chara-Pacioretty hit as an opportunity to belittle the NHL for being unwilling to change should look in the mirror.
I’ve been a passionate hockey fan for as long as I can remember. I’ve played, refereed and coached. I’ve lived it. I’ve breathed it.

Why Brian Burke is the man for Toronto; what the Panthers were thinking in trading Frolik; why Trevor Gillies isn't bad; and more.
Toronto GM Brian Burke takes a lot of guff from detractors who claim he’s overrated and has inherited every good team he’s ever managed.

Two massive trades came out of nowhere in the past few days, so we break down which teams came out on top.
Shortly after the 2004-05 lockout, Chris Pronger was traded from St. Louis to Edmonton for Eric Brewer, Jeff Woywitka and Doug Lynch. It was the dawn of a new era in the NHL and while most early moves such as this one were done to align teams in a new economic and competitive era, it brought a sense of excitement accentuated by the return of hockey in general.

The 2009 first-rounder, in his first AHL season, was recently called up to the NHL for the first time and it's been an experience he'll never forget.
If you’re reading this, at some point in your life you’ve probably dreamt about playing in the NHL. The odds are long, the journey is tough and, for the vast majority of us, the ultimate goal is never really within reach.

As we get ready for the final months of the regular season, we take a look at some noteworthy stats.
Statistics, of course, don’t tell the whole story. The only way you can get a real sense of how good or bad teams are is to sit and watch them play out their games.

THN.com Blog: Eagerly hoping for Peter Forsberg's return

Instead of receiving flak for attempting a return to the NHL for the first time since 2008, Forsberg deserves admiration.
I can’t for the life of me understand why anyone wouldn’t want to see Peter Forsberg return to the NHL. This whole line of thinking that an aged player should just walk away instead of returning because he’d “make a fool of himself” is silly – and it runs directly against how any one of us would approach anything we wanted to keep doing, even if we knew our best before date had passed.

The Rangers dealt their most experienced defender for 24-year-old Wolski, who has had a hot-and-cold start to his career.
It wasn’t all that long ago the New York Rangers spent gobs of money to bring in a laundry list of players to try and mish-mash together a Stanley Cup contender.

While a lot of stars have excelled at the WJC, there are also a lot of promising prospects who performed well at the tournament, but didn't make it in the big leagues.

Forget the NHL's Winter Classic, outdoor hockey at its finest is played on homemade rinks with friends and family, creating memories that last a lifetime.
The best part about the holiday season? Playing outdoor hockey on the rink, of course. Ever since I can remember we’ve had a rink at our house.
