2009-2010 Bisons/Canada West Hockey

Have something to say about the game in general or on minor or junior hockey? You've found the right the spot.

Lakehead do so well because in Thunder Bay - Who does one cheer for? The Leafs? Montreal? Chicago or Detroit? Thunder Bay isn't close to anything! It's an island in the middle of nowhere. Even when they had the Jets, it was too far to go to Winnipeg to see a game!

We have three forum people here from Thunder Bay Ont.
Their opinions on the NHL are so valuable because - They are objective opinions. Not marred by the 'homerisms' of GO TEAM GO - Not blinded by their own bias' towards their own team, divisions, etc.

The Evil Monkeys can point to their past, that's for sure!

COMEBACK FALLS SHORT

Something that happens with some regularity is that when a team beats the Evil Monkeys on Friday night they get their *** handed to them in Saturday's rematch. For example, the opening weekend series they had against Calgary.

So when the Evil Monkeys were swiping wallets and jewelery and opening a 4-0 lead, all seemed normal in Edmontown. The 1st period shots on goal were 13-4 for Alberta, and it was 2-0 within 3 minutes. The Bisons somewhat withstood the barage thereafter, but a goal in the last minute of the 1st and on a PP within two minutes of the 2nd made this one look like a romp.

Tyler Dittmer notched his 4th goal five minutes into the 2nd and the Bisons went into the 2nd intermission down 4-1. Not a great situation, but better than a shut-out.

In the 3rd it was time to make things scary on Halloween for the Evil Monkeys. Mike Hellyer scored in the opening minute and it was 4-2. And the Monkeys were worried. I heard they may have thrown some feces on their bench. However, while the Bisons created chances they were not generating goals until 16 minutes, when Ian Duval made it 4-3. With Alberta clinging to life the scored an empty netter to salt away the win, and move back into a tie.

With the Bisons entering a bye week and Alberta facing UBC, one has to think that Alberta will regain first place. But the Bisons have shown that they can match the Monkeys, and everybody else for that matter.

Holy crap! The Banjo Dogs beat the H0rny Ones like a rented mule yet again. It was 4-0 after the 1st, and shots were 15-5 for Sask. However, Lethbridge did not throw in the towel. They rallied somewhat and by the end outshot Sask 38-35. But Sask did not let them gain any ground.

This looked to be an even match-up. But the Cougars needed points, and Calgary now leads Regina by 8 points.

I got to see the Bisons play when I was visiting my brother in Minny and we drove up for a game. We try to take in all the college west games, usually the ND games when we get a chance. It also allows for some draft scouting for the forum too. I would like to see more exhibition games between CanWest and the NCAA programs! I'd love to have both Canadian programs and the US programs MERGED :o

Whatcha think, Hollywood? Merging the CanWest and the US/NCAA programs!
Colorado College vs. the Bisons! Chi/Ill. vs. The Evil Monkeys from Edmon-chuck!

Entering the weekend in last place, and a minimum 3 points in arrears of each other division rival, the Cougars needed this one. (I guess Cougars generally get their way around Horny Ones!) However, they managed the win on a paltry 15 shots on goal, 5 per period. It is unusual for Lethbridge to vastly out-shoot an opponent. But there you go. Veteran Adam Ward stopped 37 shots for the shutout, in his first start of the season. The Horny Ones are now 3-5-1 and the Cougars are 3-6-0.

After 4 points last weekend, all were anxious to see if the Banjo Dogs had bounced back to match the pundits' pre-season expectations, or if the Dinos could hold to their early season form. Bad news for everybody else is that the game went to a shoot-out, thus producing 3 points for allocation. The Banjo Dogs held period leads of 2-1 and 3-1 but were unable to hold off the resurgent Dinos. The result leaves Calgary at 6-1-2 (now a point ahead of the Bisons) and Sask is 3-5-1.

A home series against the Evil Monkeys gave the 'Birds a chance to show they were ready to step up and mount a challenge in Canada West this year. Instead, they got clobbered. Ironically, Edmontown's pro football squad did the same thing to British California's pro football squad at the same time. The score can be misleading, gowever. I was listening on-line and UBC was out-playing Alberta in the 1st period. Shots were 17-8 and UBC led 2-1. However, two goals late in the 2nd allowed Alberta to grab the lead. And then UBC fell apart in the 3rd. Alberta is now 7-1-1 and jump into 1st place. UBC is 3-3-1 and in that 3-way tie for 4th.

There are loads of problems to overcome for all that to happen. Foremost is that the NCAA and their respective conferences seek total control of what they do. So they would not join anybody else's league. Another is that the NCAA has loads of travel restrictions on hockey teams. So when exhibition games are held they are almost always hosted by the NCAA team.

There also is not much room on anybody's schedule. Teams take exam breaks in December and have to wrap up by the end of March for April exams.

Since Canada West has 7 teams there are opportunities for them to schedule more non-conference games. We'll see what happens next when Alabama-Huntsville (a Div 1 team) are presently without a conference. I could see some CW teams wanting to set up some games with them, if the NCAA would allow it.

I think he's right, D'Rant. A merger would benefit us, the Canadians if anything. I think the gist of the drunken suggestion was in trying to help the Canada West program as well as Canadian college and university hockey coast to coast. It would be nice to increase the profile and the program, adding exposure, and making it just as much a grind as are the Canadian junior programs who the scouts always give a priority to.

It's an interesting analogy sometimes, hockey to life as the US tends to be a very dominating country who like to be in control of everyone and everything and the way they micromanage little things like the travel restrictions. Consideration for exams would also vary to such a degree scheduling would be difficult.
